Chicago O'Hare vs Midway

Chicago has two major airports and they serve completely different parts of the metro area. O'Hare (ORD) is 17 miles northwest on the Kennedy Expressway. Midway (MDW) is 10 miles southwest on the I-55. Which you should use depends on where you're going — and where your driver is coming from.

The Quick Answer

If you're flying into the city or coming from the north or northwest suburbs, O'Hare is almost always right. If you're coming from the south or southwest suburbs — or catching a Southwest flight — Midway is closer and cheaper. The airline often makes the decision for you.

O'Hare: The Full Picture

O'Hare is a city unto itself. With four operational terminals, over 900 daily flights, and a full international concourse in Terminal 5 on the south side of the airport loop, it handles complexity no other Midwest airport comes close to. This matters for ground transportation in specific ways.

Terminal 1 serves United domestic. Terminal 2 handles United regional and some other carriers. Terminal 3 is American Airlines, Delta, and Air Canada — the busiest terminal for domestic travel. Terminal 5 is international only: Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, Aer Lingus, Korean Air, and dozens more. Terminal 5 is physically separated from the 1/2/3 cluster, connected by the Airport Transit System people-mover.

Ground transportation pickup at O'Hare uses the lower-level arrivals drive. Commercial vehicles like our black cars stage in the designated area off the lower level. Our drivers know every inch of this — which exit puts you closest to your car, which carousel typically has international bags, how long customs takes on a Tuesday versus a Sunday.

Midway: Smaller, Simpler, Often Better

Midway's reputation as the "other airport" undersells it significantly. For Southwest Airlines passengers — which covers a huge slice of domestic leisure and business travel — Midway is the only option, and it's a better airport experience than O'Hare for stress-free travel.

One terminal. Clear signage. Baggage claim within reasonable walking distance of arrivals. The commercial vehicle pickup area on the lower level is compact and well-organized. A driver waiting for you at Midway can actually see the exit — not something you can say about O'Hare Terminal 3 domestic arrivals.

The I-55 (Stevenson Expressway) is Midway's highway. Compared to the Kennedy Expressway serving O'Hare, the Stevenson is generally less congested for non-rush-hour travel. Southwest Chicago, Cicero, Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Blue Island — all are Midway territory and all are a quick, direct drive.

If you're heading to neighborhoods south of the Loop — Bridgeport, Pilsen, Hyde Park, Beverly — Midway puts you in the right direction. O'Hare would mean driving through downtown both ways, and no one wants that.

The Expressway Question: Kennedy vs Stevenson

The Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) connecting downtown to O'Hare is, by several measures, one of the most congested stretches of urban interstate in the United States. During morning rush (7–9 AM) and evening rush (4–7 PM), what is a 30-minute trip becomes 60–90 minutes. This is not an exaggeration. This is every weekday.

The alternative routes — the I-294 (Tri-State Tollway) looping around from the north — add miles but sometimes save time during the worst Kennedy backups. Our drivers know when to cut across to the Tri-State and when to stay on the Kennedy. Traffic intelligence is part of what you're paying for.

The Stevenson (I-55) to Midway is generally less severe. It backs up on Friday afternoon, it slows in rain, and post-game Bears traffic from Soldier Field can be bad in autumn. But as a daily commuter corridor, it does not approach the Kennedy in congestion frequency or severity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Chicago airport is closer to downtown?

Midway is closer to downtown Chicago — approximately 10 miles southwest via the I-55. O'Hare is 17 miles northwest via the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94). In light traffic, Midway runs 20–25 minutes; O'Hare runs 30–45 minutes. In heavy traffic, both can double. The shorter distance doesn't always mean a shorter trip — it depends heavily on rush hour on each corridor.

How much does a car service to O'Hare vs Midway cost?

From downtown Chicago, our flat rate to O'Hare is $75 and to Midway is $55. The ~$20 difference reflects the additional distance on the Kennedy Expressway. From the North Shore or northwest suburbs, O'Hare is actually closer and cheaper than Midway. From the southwest suburbs — Orland Park, Joliet, Naperville — Midway is closer and less expensive.

Which airport has more airline options?

O'Hare is a major international hub with all three terminal buildings serving United, American, Delta, and all international carriers including the entire Terminal 5 international concourse. Midway is primarily Southwest Airlines, with some other carriers. If you need a specific airline, that often makes the decision for you.

Is O'Hare or Midway easier for ground transportation pickup?

Midway is significantly simpler for ground transportation. One terminal, a straightforward lower-level arrivals drive, and the commercial vehicle lot is close to baggage claim. O'Hare has four terminals spread across a loop road system, Terminal 5 is separated from 1/2/3, and traffic management is more complex. Our drivers know both inside and out, but first-time visitors find Midway less stressful.

Which airport should I choose for a trip to the North Shore suburbs?

O'Hare, without question. The North Shore — Evanston, Winnetka, Lake Forest, Highland Park — sits along the I-94 corridor north of the city. O'Hare to Evanston is 20 miles; Midway to Evanston is 25 miles with a full city crossing. Book the airport that sends you home in the right direction.

What about O'Hare vs Midway for the western suburbs?

For the western suburbs along the I-290/I-88 corridor — Oak Park, Lombard, Wheaton, Naperville — both airports are reasonable. O'Hare is slightly closer to the near-west suburbs; Midway is slightly closer to Naperville and Aurora via I-88. The real question is which airlines serve your destination — that usually settles it.
