Tipping your airport limo driver is expected — but how much? This guide covers the real numbers in Chicago.
Standard Tipping Range for Airport Car Service
The standard tip for airport car service in Chicago is 15-20% of the fare. On a $89 sedan ride from O'Hare to downtown, that's $13-18. Most riders round up to the nearest $5, so $15 is the most common tip we see. For exceptional service — help with heavy bags, early morning pickup, patient wait during delays — 20-25% is appreciated.
When to Tip More (and When Standard Is Fine)
Tip above 20% when: your driver helped with 4+ bags, waited extra time without complaint, navigated a difficult pickup (hospital, construction zone, event venue), or made a stop along the way. Standard 15% is appropriate for straightforward point-A-to-point-B rides where everything goes as expected. There's no expectation to tip below 15% — if service was poor, call the company directly.
Is Gratuity Already Included?
At Chicago Airport Black Car, gratuity is NOT included in quoted fares. Some competitors include 18-20% automatically, especially for hourly bookings or event packages. Always ask when booking. Our quotes show the base fare only — what you see is what you pay, plus tolls and your chosen gratuity.
Cash vs App Tipping
Cash tips go directly to your driver, immediately. If paying by card, you can add gratuity at the time of payment or after the ride via our booking system. Drivers appreciate cash because there's no processing delay, but either method works. Venmo and Zelle work too — just ask your driver.
